Meet Erica Hughes

Erica Hughes
Radio has been a huge part of Erica’s life since she began her career in the early 80s broadcasting in her hometown of Liverpool. Since then she has been heard on numerous BBC and Commercial stations around the UK including BBC Radio Merseyside, Radio City, Hereward Radio, Red Rose, BBC Radio Nottingham, Leicester Sound and ‘her favourite’ Radio Trent where she first met Len Groat over 30 years ago! “He was a joy to work with and his professionalism and passion have impacted my radio work ever since” she says.
One of the highlights of her career was in 2003 when she returned to the East Midlands to join Saga 106.6 Radio presenting the highly popular daily morning show. There she worked with a tremendous team including “Diddy” David Hamilton, as well as the original GEM-AM’s Andy Marriott and Tim Rogers. Whilst at Saga Erica had the pleasure of interviewing hundreds of fascinating guests from every walk of life but says her proudest moment was when she interviewed ‘the ultimate interviewer” the late Sir David Frost”. That was a dream come true” she enthuses.
For the past decade home for this Liver Bird has been the United States in Cleveland, Ohio. It may be a long way from Liverpool where she was born but it certainly has a proud music connection as it’s the home of the superb Rock n Roll Hall of Fame (the term Rock n Roll was coined by Cleveland DJ Alan Freed!) and so if she’s ever feeling homesick she can wander around there and see some magnificent Beatles memorabilia!

Erica was actually born in Woolton Liverpool which is precisely where John Lennon and Paul McCartney met for the first time on Saturday July 6th 1957 at St Peters Church Garden Fete. This is the church where Erica’s Mum and Dad were married. It's also where her pregnant Mum was on that historical day. So Erica’s claim to fame is that she was technically there on that day….although she wasn’t actually born until the following January! Growing up in Woolton she used to cycle past Strawberry Fields with her friends and each day caught the bus to school at Penny Lane. Her Mum and Dad still live in “the Pool” where she and her daughters regularly visit. Her favourite Beatles song is “In My Life” and it never ceases to make her feel emotional about growing up in Liverpool.

Erica is thrilled to be back on UK radio presenting the ‘Beatles Cafe’ on Solid Gold GEM AM and looks forward to sharing lots of FAB music and memories.

Join Erica Monday to Friday mornings from 6am for an hour PACKED with all your Beatles favourites!
